The Core of Existence: Understanding Tawheed in Islamic Thought and Civilization

Tawheed is the foundational pillar of Islam, serving as the cosmic truth that connects faith, ethics, and human purpose. This article explores the theological depth, scriptural roots, and transformative impact of divine monotheism on human life.

The Core of Existence: Understanding Tawheed in Islamic Thought and Civilization
By Imam Mahdi Civilizition

The principle of Tawheed—the absolute Oneness and Uniqueness of God—is the primordial heart of Islam. It is not merely a passive doctrine or a sterile formula of faith; rather, it is the fundamental axis around which the universe revolves, the ultimate reality defining human destiny, and the foundational spirit of Islamic civilization. Every aspect of Islamic belief, ethics, jurisprudence, and philosophy flows directly from this central truth. To comprehend Islam in its totality, one must first enter the sanctuary of Tawheed and contemplate its profound spiritual, intellectual, and practical dimensions.

From the dawn of human consciousness, the prophetic tradition has called mankind to acknowledge the Creator who is singular, transcendent, and supreme. As a civilizational paradigm, Tawheed liberates the human intellect from superstition, frees the human spirit from servitude to created things, and establishes a universal framework of dignity, moral accountability, and cosmic harmony.

The Dimensions of Tawheed in Islamic Thought

Scholars throughout Islamic history have categorized Tawheed into distinct, interconnected facets to aid the human mind in grasping its grandeur. While God is indivisible in His Essence, these dimensions allow believers to realize Tawheed across different spheres of thought and practice.

First is Tawheed in Essence (Tawheed al-Dhat), which denotes that God is One, unique, self-subsistent, and utterly without equal or partner. He is not composed of parts, nor is He subject to division, spatial boundary, or temporal limitation. In Surah al-Ikhlas, the Qur'an summarizes this ontological reality with divine brevity:

"Say, 'He is Allah, [who is] One, Allah, the Eternal Refuge. He neither begets nor is born, nor is there to Him any equivalent.'" (Qur'an 112:1-4)

Second is Tawheed in Attributes (Tawheed al-Sifat). Islamic theology maintains that Allah possesses attributes of absolute perfection—such as Knowledge, Power, Mercy, and Justice. Crucially, His attributes are not separate entities attached to His Essence, nor do they resemble the finite traits of His creation. As the Qur'an explicitly establishes: "There is nothing like unto Him, and He is the Hearing, the Seeing." (Qur'an 42:11). Scholars caution against two theological extremes: tashbih (anthropomorphism, or likening God to creation) and ta'til (divesting God of His attributes entirely). True Tawheed maintains His divine attributes while affirming His absolute transcendence.

Third is Tawheed in Actions and Lordship (Tawheed al-Rububiyyah wa al-Af'al). This signifies that Allah is the sole Creator, Originator, and Sustainer of all existence. No cause in the universe operates independently of His divine permission and order. As stated in Surah al-An'am:

"That is Allah, your Lord; there is no deity except Him, the Creator of all things, so worship Him. And He is Disposer of all things." (Qur'an 6:102)

Finally, Tawheed in Worship (Tawheed al-Ibadah or al-Uloohiyyah) is the practical culmination of these intellectual realizations. Because Allah alone is the ultimate Sustainer and Source of all perfection, He alone is worthy of devotion, prayer, obedience, and ultimate submission. Directing worship to anything other than the Creator undermines the purpose of human existence.

Scriptural Clarity and Cosmic Order

The Qur'an repeatedly directs human reason to observe the order and balance of the universe as evidence of the Divine Unity. The perfect coherence of the cosmos reflects the unified Will that brought it into being. The Qur'an articulates this logical truth clearly:

"Had there been within the heavens and earth gods besides Allah, they both would have been ruined. So exalted is Allah, Lord of the Throne, above what they describe." (Qur'an 21:22)

In the celebrated Ayat al-Kursi (the Verse of the Throne), the grandeur of Tawheed is highlighted in relation to divine sovereignty and eternal life:

"Allah! There is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of [all] existence. Neither drowsiness overtakes Him nor sleep. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth..." (Qur'an 2:255)

This scriptural vision establishes that Tawheed is not an abstract philosophical proposition, but an active reality governing every moment of cosmic existence.

Intellectual Depth in the Scholarly Tradition

The profound philosophical depth of Tawheed has been articulated by the prominent figures of Islamic scholarly history. Across traditions, scholars have emphasized that true monotheism demands both intellectual clarity and spiritual purity.

In Nahj al-Balagha, Sermon 1, Commander of the Faithful Ali ibn Abi Talib (a.s.) delivers a profound exposition on the nature of Tawheed:

"The foremost in religion is the acknowledgment of Him, the perfection of acknowledging Him is to testify to Him, the perfection of testifying to Him is to believe in His Oneness, the perfection of believing in His Oneness is to regard Him pure, and the perfection of His purity is to deny Him attributes [of creation]... He who attaches attributes to Him recognizes His like, and he who recognizes His like regards Him two..."

This passage underscores that God's absolute Oneness transcends numerical counting; He is One in the sense that He has no genre, species, or counterpart.

Similarly, in classic collections such as al-Kafi (Vol. 1, Book of Tawheed), traditions recorded from Imam Ja'far al-Sadiq (a.s.) emphasize the purification of Tawheed from the illusions of human imagination. When asked regarding the nature of divine knowledge and essence, he reiterated that God cannot be grasped by human physical senses or confined within mental images, for the Creator must always remain distinct from the created.

This rigorous transcendence is echoed in classic Sunni expositions, such as Al-Aqidah al-Tahawiyyah by Imam al-Tahawi, who wrote: "He is beyond having limits placed upon Him, or being restricted, or having parts or limbs. Nor is He contained by the six directions as all created things are." This unanimous convergence among major Islamic traditions highlights that Tawheed is the great unifying consensus of the Ummah.

Tawheed as a Living, Civilizational Force

When Tawheed takes root in the human heart, it radically transforms both the individual and society. Far from being restricted to theological debate, Tawheed carries direct ethical, psychological, and social consequences.

  1. Psychological Liberation: Belief in One God frees the human soul from fear of worldly powers, tyranny, and material scarcity. Knowing that ultimate power rests solely with a Merciful and Just Creator grants the believer inner tranquility and unwavering courage.
  2. Human Equality and Dignity: Tawheed eliminates all false hierarchies based on race, social status, wealth, or lineage. If there is only One Creator, then all human beings stand as equals before Him, distinguished only by piety and moral integrity.
  3. Cosmic Responsibility and Stewardship: Recognizing that the universe belongs entirely to Allah inspires a profound sense of stewardship (Khilafah). Human beings are called to treat the earth, natural resources, and fellow creatures with justice, care, and reverence.

Closing Reflection

Tawheed is the beginning and the end of the Islamic spiritual journey. It is the light that illumines human reason and the anchor that steadies the soul amidst the turbulence of life. As the Ummah seeks to build a vibrant, righteous, and dignified civilization, it must return continually to this pristine source. By aligning our thoughts, acts of worship, social structures, and moral striving with the reality of Allah's Oneness, humanity fulfills its highest calling—standing upright in devotion to the One who is the First, the Last, the Manifest, and the Hidden.
