Women Scholars of Islam: Historical Preservation of Qur'an and Sunnah
A study of women's roles as transmitters, teachers, patrons, copyists, and scholars in Islamic intellectual history.

English Study ## Recovering scholarly lives
Women participated in Islamic learning as hadith transmitters, teachers, legal authorities, patrons, readers, copyists, and founders of educational institutions. Their roles differed by place and century, and the surviving
record is uneven. A careful history neither erases their contributions nor assumes that every society offered equal access. ## Transmission and teaching Biographical dictionaries record women who heard and
transmitted hadith, taught students, and granted transmission permissions. A report's authority still depends on the same questions of wording, continuity, and evaluation applied to other transmitters. Gender alone is
not a substitute for source criticism. ## Institutions and patronage Women endowed schools, libraries, hospitals, and charitable works; some became renowned teachers within scholarly networks. Their histories illuminate how
education relied on households, travel, patronage, and institutions, not solely on formal offices. ## Responsible recovery Researchers should cite primary biographical entries, distinguish contemporary evidence from later legend, and
make manuscripts and catalogues accessible. The goal is not to manufacture a modern hero narrative, but to recover documented intellectual labour with scholarly precision. ## References Ibn Sa'd, al-Tabaqat
