Tafsir of Surah Al-Maa'un
Al-Ma'un condemns neglect of orphans and the poor, heedless prayer, ostentation, and refusal to offer small acts of help.
Read Surah Al-Maa'un (7 verses) as a connected chapter: follow links between neighbouring verses and compare each passage with the wider Qur’anic context. The Arabic text and English and Urdu translations are rendered on this page before any commentary service loads. Use the source selector to compare available classical tafsir traditions; the Al-Mizan study guide is clearly marked as editorial notes, not a verbatim translation. If a remote commentary service is unavailable, the chapter text, translations, study introduction, and navigation remain available.
HAST THOU ever considered [the kind of man] who gives the lie to all moral law?
Behold, it is this [kind of man] that thrusts the orphan away,
and feels no urge to feed the needy.
Woe, then, unto those praying ones
whose hearts from their prayer are remote
those who want only to be seen and praised,
and, withal, deny all assistance [to their fellow-men]!
